Memorial Day Means More Than a Long Weekend

Updated: Jun 2

There’s something about Memorial Day that can feel a little quiet underneath all the noise.

The cookouts.

The lake trips.

The long weekend plans.

The unofficial start of summer.

And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with gathering with people we love and enjoying life, Memorial Day also carries something deeper with it — remembrance.

Real people.

Real families.

Real sacrifice.

People who once had ordinary mornings, favorite songs, inside jokes, plans for the future, people waiting for them at home… and who gave their lives in service to others.

That matters.

At A Wild Fern, one of the things I think about often is how easy it can be for people to become statistics, headlines, or names we quickly pass over without fully remembering the human being behind them.

But every life mattered deeply to someone.

Someone’s child.

Someone’s spouse.

Someone’s best friend.

Someone who was loved, needed, missed, and never replaced.

Memorial Day reminds us to slow down long enough to remember that freedom has always come at a cost carried by real people and real families.

And maybe today is also a reminder to hold the people we still have a little closer.

To make the phone call.

To sit outside a little longer.

To say “I love you” more freely.

To stop rushing through life long enough to appreciate the people beside us.

Because life is fragile.

And meaningful.

And far too easy to take for granted when we’re moving too fast.

So today, while flags wave and grills fire up and summer begins peeking around the corner, I hope we also make space for gratitude.

Not performative gratitude.

Not rushed gratitude.

Real gratitude.

For sacrifice.

For service.

For freedom.

For people.

From A Wild Fern, thank you to the service members who gave everything, and to the families who continue carrying that loss long after the holiday passes.

We remember. 🌿
